Rod Zegwi
Dan Pikan (2016)

Rod Zegwi Dan Pikan is a short film that won the Tzebu d’Or at the Rencontres du Film Court in Madagascar. Described as a “gorgeous animated visual essay” during its North American premiere at the Palm Springs International ShortFest 2016, the short was selected for more than 30 festivals worldwide.

Rod Zegwi Dan Pikan is an introspective look into the state of mind of a woman. The film recounts the protagonist’s battles in life, her relationship with her daughter, and her struggles with addiction. This film is a meditation on the nature of human memory.

It was shot on 35mm stills, over multiple exposures. The stills were hand-processed and soaked, physically and chemically tempered.

Hikupkampus (2015)

Hikupkampus was an experiential art installation featuring 11 CRT TVs, a DVD player, headphones, and an old dentist chair. This setup created an immersive journey into a mosaic of memories spanning over three generations, from the 1960s to the present day. The installation was exhibited at an art gallery in the west of Mauritius.

Each screen displayed a different montage of homemade videos; each headphone delivered a unique soundtrack. The audio aligned with the video at rare intervals. This deliberate dissonance enhanced the representation of fragmented and overlapping memories.

The single dentist chair symbolizes the viewer’s role as an observer, akin to an eye rolled back into the socket, peering into the depths of the mind. The tangled cables resemble nerve endings, connecting the viewer to the sensory input and amplifying the immersive experience.

The footage consisted of personal, homemade videos from the Azim’s family, capturing moments across 50 years and three generations. This rich tapestry of visual and auditory elements invited viewers to reflect on the nature of memory and the passage of time, making Hikupkampus a profound exploration of personal and collective history.

ID - GAF (2016)

Two people place their heads inside a capsule, observing as LED lights shift on either side of a two-way mirror. This creates the illusion of their faces melting into each other.

The installation explores our sense of empathy, demonstrating how mere visual cues can evoke a near-tactile sensation of another person’s skin.

Plant in the
Machine

Recorded piano chords into the modular using a piezo microphone. In turn, connected a plant into the modular. The fluctuations in electrical conductivity of the plant decided how often to play the same note, how long and how much to granulate the sound. I accompanied with some sparse notes of my own. Like a duet between myself and the plant, through a machine.
